About

CANADA gallery had recently moved to 60 Lispenard Street in Tribeca when a small storefront became available on the same block at 61 Lispenard Street. By expanding into an auxiliary location, CANADA was able to incorporate a bookstore, meeting area, storage and flexible exhibition capacities into their program.

61 Lispenard can be described as a long room that connects a storefront on Canal Street to a storefront on Lispenard Street. Responding to the multiple needs of the program, the through-block volume has been loosely partitioned by a series of wood framed thresholds. The architecture of the spaces between the frames is un-specific. Each interval can operate in various modes: display, storage, meeting, pod-casting, sales. The frames can accommodate cladding for display or infill for storage, so that the purpose of each space is defined by the stuff supplied by staff or artists.
